Iraqi general, colonel gunned down
Bombings leave at least 12 dead, 61 wounded in Baghdad
Thursday, May 12, 2005 Posted: 7:57 AM EDT (1157 GMT)
BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Gunmen killed two Iraqi ministry officials in separate incidents Thursday morning as they were headed to work in Baghdad, police said.
Brig. Gen. Iyad Imad Mahdi with the Ministry of Defense was gunned down in the western neighborhood of Jihad, police said.
Col. Jamal Ahmed Hussien also was killed when gunmen opened fire on his car in the al-Amin neighborhood as he was on his way to the Interior Ministry.
Also Thursday, a suicide car bomber drove into in an eastern Baghdad marketplace, killing 12 people and wounding 56 others, Iraqi police said.
The attack took place in Baghdad's al-Jadida neighborhood at a busy intersection(1) near a mosque(2), post office and movie theater.
Video from the scene showed burning vehicles and billowing(3) black smoke.
A few hours later, a suicide car bomber targeted a U.S. military convoy along a highway in western Baghdad, wounding five civilians, police said.
There was no immediate word on American casualties(4).
Bomb kills 2 Marines
Two U.S. Marines were killed and 14 others wounded when a bomb struck their armored vehicle(5) Wednesday evening during an offensive in northwestern Iraq, the military said.
Five Marines have died in combat since Sunday when the U.S. military began Operation Matador against insurgents(6) in Anbar province near the Syrian border.
Washington Post correspondent Ellen Knickmeyer, embedded (7)with the Marines, reported in Thursday's editions that she was in the vehicle, which can carry as many as 18 troops, until minutes before it exploded in an orange ball of fire.
The bombing happened east of the town of Husayba near the Euphrates River, the military said.
Knickmeyer wrote that the dead and wounded troops were part of the Marines' 1st Platoon, Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 25th Regiment -- a reserve unit based in Columbus, Ohio.
The platoon(8) was involved in fierce fighting four days earlier in Ubaydi, a battle that killed two Marines and left five others wounded.
Knickmeyer quoted the 1st Platoon's commander saying at least 60 percent of his troops have been killed or wounded in this week's fighting.
CNN's Enes Dulami contributed to this report.
